United States Attorney Gregory A. White of the Northern District of Ohio has announced his resignation effective Midnight on Friday, February 29, 2008. After his resignation, Mr. White will be sworn in as the newest United States Magistrate Judge in the Northern District of Ohio. Mr. White’s Chambers will be
in Cleveland and he will begin his duties on Monday, March 3, 2008.

Mr. White is a graduate of Kent State University and the Cleveland Marshall College of Law, Magna Cum Laude. He has served as United States Attorney in the Northern District of Ohio since February 18, 2003. Prior to his appointment as United States Attorney, he was the elected Lorain County Prosecutor for twenty-two years. During his tenure as United States Attorney, Mr. White served on the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee in Washington, DC, and was Chairperson of the LECC/Victim/Community
Issues Subcommittee.

Mr. White was very active in the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association and served as its President from December 1989 to December 1990 and was selected Outstanding Prosecuting Attorney of Ohio in December 1995. He served for ten years on the Ohio Criminal Sentencing Commission helping to revise Ohio’s Criminal Code.

Mr. White served in the United States Marine Corps during the years 1968 and 1969 and his service included a Vietnam tour of duty with the Ninth Infantry Regiment.

During his five years as United States Attorney, Mr. White was instrumental in helping obtain over $10 Million in grant money for various projects in the Northern District of Ohio, to include: Six City Gang Initiative, Northern Ohio Violent Crime Consortium, Project Safe Neighborhoods and Project Safe Childhood, to name a few.

Mr. White was also instrumental in supervising various public corruption prosecutions including that of Thomas Noe of Toledo and Nate Gray of Cleveland. Also during his tenure, Mr. White oversaw a tremendous increase in the prosecution of gun crimes and possession of guns by convicted felons throughout the District.

Upon Mr. White’s Departure, First Assistant U.S. Attorney William J. Edwards will become Acting United States Attorney. Mr. Edwards has been in the U.S. Attorney’s office since 1973 and has been First Assistant U.S. Attorney since 1978. He previously served as Acting U.S. Attorney in 1988.

Mr. Edwards is a graduate of Marietta College and of Case Western Reserve University School of Law. Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, he served as an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Boston and New York City for three-and-one-half years.

The Northern District of Ohio encompasses the 40 northernmost counties in the State of Ohio and includes the cities of Cleveland, Toledo, Youngstown, Akron and Canton. The United States Attorney’s Office with staff in Cleveland, Toledo, Youngstown and Akron has 76 attorneys and is responsible for conducting all criminal and civil litigation in the District involving the United States Government.
