Fugitive from Mexico Appears in Federal Court on Extradition Proceedings
Mexican Authorities Issue Arrest Warrant for Defendant Charged with Crime of Intentional Homicide
Portland, Ore. – Justimiano Armando Ortiz-Chavez appeared today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Papak on a Complaint for Provisional Arrest in connection with extradition proceedings on an arrest warrant issued by the Government of Mexico. The warrant, dated February 15, 2001, was issued by the Second Judicial District of Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico for the arrest of Ortiz-Chavez for the crime of intentional homicide. Ortiz-Chavez will be detained pending his next appearance on this matter scheduled for May 20, 2008 at 1:30 p.m.
Ortiz-Chavez was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Oregon Fugitive Task Force (OFTF) without incident outside his home in Gresham, Oregon on April 15, 2008. The Portland Police Bureau and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office both assisted with the arrest and are members of the OFTF. The extradition matter is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Noonan.
