Jury Convicts Couple in Methamphetamine Case

California couple convicted of drug distribution in Klamath Falls, Oregon

Medford, Ore. – On May 8, 2008, a federal jury in the court of U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aiken returned verdicts of guilty against Bertha Allcia Calvillo-Nieves, age 51, and her husband, Rodrigo Nieves-Cortez, age 48, for the possession and distribution of methamphetamine and criminal conspiracy.  The defendants drove from their residence in Newell, California to deliver methamphetamine in Klamath Falls, Oregon.  The defendants were arrested by officers of the Klamath Interagency Narcotics Team while they were in the process of making a local meth delivery.  Police investigation lead to the execution of a number of search warrants in Klamath Falls and in Newell, California.  They discovered a large supply of methamphetamine at a local Klamath Falls storage facility that the defendants were using for their distribution in the local community.  Other search warrants uncovered large amounts of cash and various firearms.  Police seized a little more than 2 pounds of methamphetamine mixture in the case.  Both defendants are in custody and scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Aiken on August 14, 2008.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Byron Chatfield prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Klamath Interagency Narcotics Team and the Medford, Oregon Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) office.
