STAFFORD CASE/NATIONAL HOME ASSEMBLERS
William Stafford and Misty Stafford operated a fraudulent work-at-home scheme which did business as “National Home Assemblers”, with a mailing address in Mainesburg, Pennsylvania. This business advertised and sold work-at-home opportunities involving the assembly of refrigerator magnets. Williams Stafford and Misty Stafford are being prosecuted by the United States Department of Justice in the Middle District of Pennsylvania at docket numbers 3:05-CR-00169 and 3:05-CR-00179.
This website will be updated as court events are scheduled in this matter. William Stafford pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and Misty Stafford pleaded guilty to misprision of felony on April 23, 2007. Conspiracy to commit mail fraud carries a possible maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine, while misprision of felony carries a possible maximum sentence of three years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine. Sentencing will not take place at the time of the guilty plea, but sometime later. A United States Probation Officer will be assigned to prepare pre-sentence reports for the defendants. A pre-sentence report includes a significant amount of information, including, but not limited to, the offense itself, and details about the defendant’s criminal history, family history, educational background, financial situation, etc. As part of a pre-sentence report, restitution and victim impact statements may be included.
If you sent money to National Home Assemblers and believe that you were a victim of this scheme and are entitled to restitution, you must complete an affidavit of loss claim form which you can download from this site. If you cannot download an affidavit from this site, please contact Laurie Reiley at 1-866-673-7340. All affidavit of loss claim forms must be submitted by June 30, 2007. Please mail the claim forms to the following address: United States Attorney’s Office, Middle District of Pennsylvania, Attention: Laurie Reiley, P.O. Box 1023, Harrisburg, PA 17108.
Filing an affidavit of loss claim does not guarantee that you will receive restitution. You should also be aware that filing a false claim is a violation of Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 1001, false statements, and could subject you to federal prosecution and a sentence of up to five years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine.
In addition, you are also entitled to submit a written victim impact statement as part of the pre-sentence report. A victim impact statement is a confidential statement provided by you to the judge in the case. It will, however, be shown to the defendants. The statement should include information about how the crime impacted you and your life. If you want to submit a victim impact statement, please mail it by June 30, 2007, to the following address: United States Attorney’s Office, Middle District of Pennsylvania, Attention: Laurie Reiley, P.O. Box 1023, Harrisburg, PA 17108. A brochure entitled “Exercising Your Right To Be Heard” is on this site for helpful hints in preparing a statement. As you will see in the brochure, you also have the right to address the court on the day of sentencing. If you would like to be present and exercise that right, you will need to contact Laurie Reiley after a sentencing date is scheduled.
