Williamsport, Pennsylvania

Williamsport is the cultural hub of an 80-mile radius in central Pennsylvania. Visitors come from all over the Commonwealth to enjoy performances of the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robin Fountain. A Community Concert series is also available, as well as cultural offerings at both Lycoming College and the Pennsylvania College of Technology. Williamsport boasts a civic choir, a civic ballet, and a Community Theatre League, all of which showcase local performing talent.

Visitors to the Williamsport area can find out more about the region's rich history by visiting the Lycoming County Historical Society and Museum. Many exhibits and artifacts from the Victorian era highlight the area's lumber capital days, and the resulting prosperity enjoyed by the lumber barons who built their homes along Millionnaire's Row. Many of these architectural landmarks have been preserved and are now private homes, offices, restaurants, or bed and breakfast lodgings. The Peter Herdic House, named for one of the most famous lumber barons of the late 1800's, has been renovated into one of the area's finest restaurants and is especially spectacular at the holiday season.

President George W. Bush, the first Little League graduate to become President of the United States, visited the Little League Baseball World Series in South Williamsport in August 2001. In his remarks at Howard J. Lamade Stadium, where the annual World Series is played, President Bush said, "Years ago, when I was playing on those dusty Little League fields in West Texas, I never dreamt I'd be President of the United States. ... One of the things I did dream about though, was making it to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the Little League World Series. ... I equate Little League Baseball with good families."
