SCRANTON WOMAN SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR AIDING BANK ROBBER

Martin C. Carlson, Acting United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, announced that a 48-year old Scranton woman was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Court Judge Thomas I. Vanaskie to serve 27 months in federal prison for aiding a man who robbed the Penn Security Bank on Prescott Avenue in Scranton on May 9, 2007.

Carlson stated that Susan Brooks pleaded guilty on July 31, 2007, to aiding and abetting the bank robbery. Brooks admitted to being with Patrick Lucky when he purchased a toy gun used in the bank robbery, driving Lucky to the bank to commit the robbery, and driving the getaway vehicle after the bank robbery was committed by Lucky.

Brooks was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 15, 2007, as a result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Pennsylvania State Police, and Scranton Police. Investigators recovered the $5,595 taken from the bank when Brooks and Lucky were apprehended.

Carlson noted that Lucky pleaded guilty to committing the bank robbery and is awaiting sentencing.
Judge Vanaskie also ordered that Brooks be placed on three years of supervised release following her prison sentence. Brooks must also pay a $100 special assessment.

Carlson noted that the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa.
