ARIZONA MARIJUANA TRAFFICKER SENTENCED TO 37 MONTHS IN PRISON

Martin C. Carlson, Acting United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, announced that a Tucson, Arizona man was sentenced today by U.S. District Court Judge Edwin M. Kosik to serve 37 months in federal prison for arranging to have 300 pounds of marijuana transported from Arizona to New York in June 2007.

Carlson stated that Michael Darby, age 48, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than 100 kilograms of marijuana.

Darby’s prosecution resulted from an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Pennsylvania State Police. Agents and police seized approximately 300 pounds of marijuana from a motor home in Monroe County on June 23, 2007. Darby admitted that he recruited the driver of the vehicle, Sean Arnold, to transport the marijuana from Arizona to New York. Arnold was also charged and is awaiting trial in the case.

Judge Kosik also ordered Darby to be placed on three years of supervised release after serving his prison sentence. Darby must also pay a $100 special assessment.

Carlson noted that the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa.
