ABSTRACT: The Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act case files system was established and is maintained pursuant to 5 U.S.C. § 301, 44 U.S.C. § 3101 and the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Privacy Act (PA). This records system permits EOUSA to compile, maintain and track Freedom of Information Act and/or Privacy Act requests made directly to EOUSA or referred to EOUSA by one of the 93 USAOs or other agency or department.

PURPOSE: This system of records was established and is maintained to comply with the statutory obligations of the Freedom of Information Act and the Privacy Act. EOUSA serves as the official record keeper for EOUSA and all United States Attorneys offices.

ACCESS CONSTRAINTS: The information contained in the FOIA/PA office at EOUSA is maintained in file folders in metal file cabinets in a room occupied by staff personnel during working hours and locked after working hours. Records maintained in electronic format are protected through the use of user identification numbers issued only to authorized personnel.

AGENCY PROGRAM: The USAOs are charged with the enforcement of United States law both civil and criminal in conjunction with the Department of Justice. EOUSA serves as a liaison between the 93 USAOs and the Department of Justice and as the official record keeper for all USAOs. Compilation, maintenance and tracking of FOIA/PA case files serves as a necessary tool in the representation of the interests of the United States and as a mechanism for compliance with the Freedom of Information Act and Privacy Act.

SOURCES OF DATA: The information maintained in this system includes the original correspondence, the official response to the request and any information or attachments transmitted with the request.
