BRADFORD MAN FINED AND SENTENCED TO PROBATION FOR MAIL THEFT BY A POSTAL EMPLOYEE

The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont stated David Plante, 48, of Bradford, Vermont, was sentenced to one year of probation and fined $250 for Mail Theft by a Postal Employee. The Honorable William K. Sessions, III, imposed the sentence in United States District Court in Burlington, Vermont.

According to Court records, in March, 2007, the defendant was employed by the United States Postal Service at the White River Junction Parcel and Distribution Center.
The Veterans Affairs pharmacy mails prescription medications to disabled veterans and these packages are processed in the White River Junction center. On March 30, 2007, VA and Postal Service investigators caught the defendant stealing a VA package which contained 230 oxycodone tablets. Oxycodone is a prescription medication used to treat pain.

United States Attorney Thomas D. Anderson thanked the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General and the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General who investigated the case. The defendant was represented by Assistant Federal Defender Elizabeth Mann. Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth C. Woodcock prosecuted the case for the United States.
