Employment Opportunities for Research Analysts

The Expert Analysis Group (EAG) of the Antitrust Division works with Division attorneys and paralegals to analyze the competitive implications of proposed mergers, investigate potential anticompetitive behavior, and prepare for antitrust litigation. Economics Research Analysts (RAs) work closely with Ph.D. economists to provide data analysis and research support in these investigations and Division trials. RAs get the opportunity to contribute to Division decisions in fields such as energy, health care, airlines, telecommunications, and many more.

Opportunities and Responsibilities

Whether researching a multibillion dollar proposed merger or investigating anticompetitive conduct, RAs work on cases that can affect the lives of millions of consumers. RAs assist in civil investigations of corporate mergers and acquisitions as well as in criminal antitrust cases such as price fixing and cartels. They play a vital role in ensuring enforcement of U.S. competition laws.

RAs work on data preparation and cleaning, data visualization (charts, tables, maps), regression analysis, and simulations. They use a wide variety of statistical software and programming languages including Stata, R, ArcGIS, Python, SAS, SQL, and Excel.

Career Preparation

RAs develop the programming, analytical and critical thinking skills vital for success in graduate study and careers in high-demand technical fields. Many EAG alumni pursue graduate study in economics and related fields in prestigious doctoral programs throughout the country. Others have gone on to careers in economic consulting, banking and investments, the tech sector, and other government agencies.

Term and Compensation

Research analysts are appointed to a 14-month term with the opportunity to renew for a maximum service length of four years. Most research analysts are hired at the GS-7 level with opportunities to advance to GS-9 commensurate with performance.

How to Apply

EAG typically hires research analysts with degrees in economics, math, or statistics from a variety of leading colleges and universities, though other fields may be considered.
