Brian A. Benczkowski (2018-2020)

Early History: Brian Allen Benczkowski was born in 1969. He received his B.A. from the University of Virginia in 1991 and his J.D. from the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Missouri in 1994. From 2002 to 2010, he served in various roles on Capitol Hill and at the U.S. Department of Justice. In particular, from 2007 to 2008, he was Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General, U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Legislative Affairs. From 2008 to 2009, he was Chief of Staff, U.S. Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General. And from 2009 to 2010, he was Staff Director, Republican Staff, U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary. In 2010, Mr. Benczkowski joined the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis.

Tenure: In 2017, Mr. Benczkowski was nominated as Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division. He was confirmed in July 2018 and served until July 2020. Under his direction, the Division experienced growth in many areas, including combating cybercrime and financial fraud. He oversaw the implementation of several policy changes related to how the DOJ prosecutes corporations.

Later Career: After his service at the Department, Mr. Benczkowski returned to private practice, working at the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis and specializing in white collar and internal investigations.
