The Tax Division's mission is to enforce the nation's tax laws fully, fairly, and consistently, through both criminal and civil litigation, in order to promote voluntary compliance with the tax laws, maintain public confidence in the integrity of the tax system, and promote the sound development of the law. Civil and criminal employment tax enforcement is among the Tax Division's highest priorities.
The Offshore Compliance Initiative develops projects, methodologies, and techniques for identifying U.S. taxpayers who are involved in abusive offshore transactions and financial arrangements for tax avoidance purposes.
The Swiss Bank Program provides a path for Swiss banks to resolve potential criminal liabilities in the United States.
One of the Tax Division’s highest priorities is prosecuting people who use stolen identities to steal money from the United States Treasury by filing fake tax returns that claim tax refunds.
We work hard to shut down fraudulent tax return preparers and tax-fraud promoters, using both civil and criminal enforcement tools.
