DOUGLAS MELAMED NAMED ANTITRUST DEPUTY FOR CIVIL, APPELLATE AND INTERNATIONAL MATTERS

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Department of Justice today named A. Douglas Melamed, 50, a partner at the Washington, D.C., law firm of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, as the Antitrust Division's Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General.

Melamed succeeds Joel Klein, who will become the Acting Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division upon Anne Bingaman's departure on October 18. Bingaman announced today that she will take a position as a Guest Scholar for telecommunications and antitrust issues at The Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., while she pursues a permanent position in the private sector.

As the Principal Deputy at the Antitrust Division, Melamed will oversee the Division's civil enforcement program and its appellate activities. He will also be responsible for implementing the Division's international efforts, which include both cooperation with foreign authorities to ensure effective law enforcement in a global economy and participation in international organizations whose mission is to promote world-wide market access and free and fair competition.

Melamed comes to the Antitrust Division after 25 years at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, where he has been a partner since 1978 and the Chair of the firm's Antitrust and Consumer Protection Group since 1995.

Melamed is widely considered to be one of the leaders of the antitrust bar, and is a member of both the American Bar Association's Antitrust Section and the American Law Institute's Consultative Group on Unfair Competition.

At Wilmer, Cutler, Melamed represented a wide variety of clients on antitrust and economic regulation matters.

Melamed has also written several articles and taught courses on the subject of antitrust law.

"Doug's wealth of experience in private practice, as well as his sophisticated understanding of antitrust law, will make him extremely valuable to the Division. We are truly fortunate to have him join us," said Klein.

Melamed graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Yale College in 1967, majoring in Political Science and Economics. He received his law degree from Harvard University, where he graduated cum laude in 1970. After law school, Melamed clerked for the Honorable Charles M. Merrill on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

In addition to his bar activities and scholarly endeavors, Melamed has also devoted many hours to community service. In the past, he served on Yale University's Council Committee on the Social Sciences and serves as the D.C. Area Chair of the Yale Campaign. He is currently on the Development Council of the Sidwell Friends School.

Melamed and his wife Carol reside in Chevy Chase, Maryland. They have two children. ###
