ATTORNEY GENERAL APPOINTS U.S. TRUSTEE TO OVERSEE
BANKRUPTCY CASES IN CONNECTICUT, NEW YORK AND VERMONT

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Attorney General Janet Reno has
appointed Carolyn S. Schwartz, a New York native, as U.S Trustee
to oversee the administration of bankruptcy cases in the Judicial
Districts of Connecticut, New York, and Vermont, the Justice
Department announced today.

Schwartz, whose appointment as United States Trustee for
Region 2 runs for five years, will assume her duties today. As
Trustee, Schwartz will play an important oversight role in the
administration of the bankruptcy process--appointing and
monitoring individuals employed to represent bankruptcy estates,
assessing the feasibility of plans of reorganization, commenting
on the fee applications of attorneys and other professionals, and
investigating and assisting in the prosecution of bankruptcy
crimes. The principal office for Region 2 is located in New York
City, with district offices in New Haven, Connecticut, and in
Garden City, Albany, Buffalo, Utica, and Rochester, New York.

Schwartz brings over 13 years of experience in the
bankruptcy field to her new role. After graduating Magna Cum
Laude in 1979 with a B.S. in Engineering from Princeton
University, Schwartz earned her Juris Doctor from Harvard Law
School in 1982. Schwartz worked for two years as an Associate
with the firm of Baer, Marks & Upham. In 1984, she moved to
Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom where she was with its
Restructuring and Bankruptcy Department for eight years. Most
recently, Schwartz served as Of Counsel with the Bankruptcy and
Creditors Rights Group at Coudert Brothers. She has extensive
experience in both out-of-court workouts and in bankruptcy court
cases representing debtors, secured creditors, and unsecured
creditors.

Schwartz is a Certified Mediator on the Mediator Register
for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New
York, and she volunteers as an Arbitrator for the Small Claims
Court of the New York City Civil Court. In addition, she sits on
the Bankruptcy Subcommittee of the Second Circuit's Task Force on
Gender and Racial Bias. Schwartz has been a frequent lecturer on
bankruptcy and has written numerous articles on a variety of
bankruptcy issues.

Schwartz is actively involved in a number of charitable and
community organizations. She serves on the Young Leadership
Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal (UJA), and is on the board of
the Jewish Community Center on the Upper West Side, as well as
the Executive Commitee of the Bankruptcy Lawyers Division and the
Lawyers' Division Cabinet of the New York UJA-Federation.
