Orlando Police and Orange County Public Schools Teen Summit
The USAO-MDFL was joined by the FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security in a day-long Teen Summit in Orlando hosted by the Orlando Police Department (OPD) and Orange County Public Schools (OCPS).
The goal of this summit was to provide a day of educational training, youth empowerment, and teen violence reduction strategies through education. The summit was opened by OPD Chief Eric D. Smith and OPD Youth Outreach Coordinator Corporal Marcus Hyatt. More than 600 students, faculty, and chaperones were in attendance from seven area public schools – OCPS Academic School of Excellence (ACE), Carver Middle School, College Park Middle School, Glenridge Middle School, Innovation Middle School, Odyssey Middle School, and Roberto Clemente Middle School.
USAO Reentry/Outreach Coordinator Khalilah Escalera, Assistant U.S. Attorneys Emily Chang and Dana Hill, along with FBI and DHS personnel conducted four separate breakout sessions discussing topics such as Social Media/Online Safety, Myers-Briggs Assessment, Victim and Witness Rights, and Anger Management/Coping Techniques, during which the importance of safeguarding personal information, and avoiding risky behaviors online were stressed. In addition, students were also engaged in conversations about the impact and consequences of cyberbullying, sexting/sextortion, and other inappropriate online activities. Other summit partners included the Valencia College School of Public Safety and the Central Florida Regional Housing Trust.
