Listening Sessions & Tribal Consultations

Tribal Consultations

Deputy Attorney General Monaco issued a memorandum establishing the Department’s Steering Committee to address the crisis of missing or murdered indigenous persons and required that the Steering Committee consult with Tribal leaders on its work. As noted in that memo, challenges faced by Tribes are best met by Tribally-driven solutions, so outreach and communication with Tribes will be fundamental to DOJ’s efforts to promote public safety in Tribal communities.

On March 16 and 17, 2022, the Department of Justice held government-to-government consultations on DOJ's efforts to address the unacceptably high rate of violent crime in Native communities, including the rates of missing or murdered indigenous persons. Additional information about the background and scope of these discussions may be found in the  framing paper. Feedback from consultation participants and written submissions informed the report pursuant to sections 2 and 4(d) of Executive Order 14053, which was submitted to the White House in July, 2022.  Please contact OTJ@usdoj.gov with any questions.
