Gregory J. Haanstad

Gregory J. Haanstad was sworn in as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin on September 19, 2022. 

As United States Attorney, Mr. Haanstad is the chief federal law enforcement official for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, which is comprised of 28 counties and encompasses roughly the eastern third of the state.  The office prosecutes violations of federal criminal law and represents the United States in both affirmative and defensive civil actions.

Mr. Haanstad joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin as an Assistant United States Attorney in 2002.  He was appointed Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division—overseeing the Financial Fraud and Public Corruption unit—in 2010, and he served as First Assistant United States Attorney from 2010 until becoming Acting United States Attorney in 2015.  In 2016, Mr. Haanstad was appointed United States Attorney, and he remained in that position until 2018.  In his career in the United States Attorney’s Office, Mr. Haanstad has prosecuted a wide variety of criminal cases, including those involving financial fraud, public corruption, bank robberies, and drug conspiracies.

Before joining the United States Attorney’s Office, Mr. Haanstad was a law clerk for United States Magistrate Judge William E. Callahan, Jr. of the Eastern District of Wisconsin.  Mr. Haanstad is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School.
