Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA)

Applicants interested in receiving consideration for AUSA positions in the Southern District of Iowa should write a cover letter expressing their interest in the position and submit the cover letter, resume and questionnaire to the following:

Resumes will be retained for a 6 month period and will be considered as vacancies occur. In addition of sending your resume please fill out the following Attorney Questionnaire and attach to your resume. Applicants for AUSA vacancies must have received their J.D. degree and have been practicing law for at least three years. In addition, Department of Justice attorneys must be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws for the State of Iowa, in a state of the United States or the District of Columbia. The Department of Justice (DOJ) currently maintains a list of selected specific attorney vacancies on the Internet at: www.justice.gov.

Starting salaries for AUSAs are based on various considerations, including among others an evaluation of an attorney's qualifications and years of experience. AUSAs receive an annual pay review that may lead to a salary increase based on various considerations, including among others the attorney's performance, current pay, and years of attorney experience. There is no formal rating system for applying veterans' preference to attorney appointments in the excepted service. However, the Department of Justice considers veterans' preference eligibility as a positive factor in attorney hiring. Applicants eligible for veterans' preference are encouraged to include that information in their cover letter or resume and attach supporting documentation (e.g., the DD 214 or other substantiating documents) to their submissions.
