Environmental Crimes and Community Safety

There are communities around the nation that bear the effects of pollution disproportionately, resulting in greater rates of illness and death, developmental impairments in children, and a variety of economic harms.  Types of environmental justice violations include but are not limited to lead, asbestos, air quality concerns, illegal dumping, hazardous waste, and water contamination issues.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California strongly enforces our nation’s environmental laws to effectively address environmental, health, and climate impacts on individuals and communities within the district. The United States Attorney plays a critical role in the successful implementation of the Department’s Environmental Justice strategy, especially given the intensely local nature of most environmental justice issues.

With a section comprised of Assistant United States Attorneys and staff specifically trained and tasked with prosecuting environmental crimes the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California has been at the forefront of enforcing the nation’s environmental laws. In line with Department policy, the United States Attorney’s Office has also designated an Environmental Justice Coordinator, Assistant United States Attorney Dominique Caamano, to further the Department’s Environmental Justice program.
