Reporting Environmental Crimes and Issues Relating to Environmental Justice

Environmental crimes and injustice can happen anywhere; however, communities of color and low-income neighborhoods often pay a higher price for these offenses.  Securing environmental justice for all communities in the Northern District of Ohio and the county as a whole is a priority for the Department of Justice.

On May 5, 2022, the Attorney General announced a comprehensive environmental justice enforcement strategy to guide the work of the Justice Department’s litigators, investigators, and United States Attorneys' offices nationwide to advance the cause of environmental justice through the enforcement of federal laws.

As part of this strategy, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio is encouraging the public to report environmental crimes and issues relating to environmental justice by visiting the Environmental Protection Agency’s website and filling out the online form.

Reports submitted to the environmental crimes email address will be reviewed by law enforcement authorities for potential violations of the law. 

On May 5, 2022, the Attorney General announced actions to enhance and advance the Department’s environmental justice work to ensure the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.

In furtherance of this strategy, in June of 2022, all United States Attorney’s Offices appointed an Environmental Justice Coordinator to oversee environmental justice issues and coordinate these matters with the Department’s newly formed Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to identify certain case types.
