Introducing the National Elder Abuse MDT Peer Support Listserv Community

Join us for the webinar, Introducing the National Elder Abuse MDT Peer Support Listserv Community. In collaboration with California District Attorneys Association (CDAA), the Elder Justice Initiative (EJI) is launching a listserv community to aid elder justice multidisciplinary teams (MDT) to communicate with and learn from one another. This peer support community includes a traditional moderated listserv, a document library for sharing relevant resources, and includes the ability for members to message each other. This project is one many supported by the EJI that seeks to build bridges between elder justice projects across the country and to support the development and sustainability of elder abuse multidisciplinary teams. Join us for a webinar exploring this new community and learn how to become a member.

Mapping Elder Justice Networks

We will introduce the new Elder Justice Networks Locator. The Locator is a map designed to help elder justice professionals to locate and collaborate with elder justice networks/teams across the nation. Networks will be added in an on-going fashion.

MDT Cross Training for Prosecutors

Nicole Sato, Deputy District Attorney, will provide an overview of the role of a prosecutor at the MDT table. Learn how to strengthen collaboration with your team’s prosecutor by delving into their role, contributions, and professional perspective. Join in a discussion about the ethical responsibilities of a prosecutor and the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in the fight against elder abuse. The discussion will include the prosecutor’s perspective on what makes a good case; what are their parameters on an MDT; what they get out of MDT collaborations and how best to collaborate; and what they contribute. Plus, we will clear up some common assumptions and misconceptions regarding the parameters of their work.

Assessing Cognitive Capacity in Elder Abuse Cases

Talitha Guinn-Shaver, MDT Technical Advisor, Elder Justice Initiative, U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, DC, hosts a discussion with Bonnie Olsen, Ph.D., Professor of Clinical Family Medicine, Vice Chair, Academic Affairs, Department of Family Medicine, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Alhambra, CA.
This webinar is offered to all professionals who work on elder abuse MDT’s to better understand the issue of decisional capacity. Dr. Olsen will provide several contexts where decisional capacity is central to case formulation and resolution. She will present the components of a good assessment with examples of how to collect and integrate relevant information. Lastly, the importance of maintaining a client-centered orientation will be discussed so that MDT’s maintain an awareness of the need to balance the client’s self-determination with the need for protection. Through this webinar, participants will learn how to:
- Recognize situations where decisional capacity is relevant to elder abuse case management and resolution
- Identify the factors that should be considered in evaluating an older adults’ decisional capacity
- Understand the importance of maintaining a client-centered orientation when assessing decisional capacity
