NDDS Policy Unit - Single Flag

The Policy Unit, part of the Narcotic and Dangerous Drug Section (“NDDS”), plays a pivotal role in shaping and advancing strategies related to counternarcotics initiatives.  Comprising a team of seasoned and adept policy attorneys, the unit operates at the forefront of governmental efforts to combat narcotics trafficking and safeguard public welfare.

Key Functions:

  1. Expert Counsel and Support – The Policy Unit offers expert counsel and comprehensive support on a large spectrum of counternarcotics matters to high-level decision-makers within the Department, including the Office of the Deputy Attorney General and the Attorney General.  Leveraging a wealth of experience, the Policy Unit aids in informed policy formulation and decision-making processes.
  2. Representation and Guidance – The Policy Unit represents the Department in interagency, intelligence, and international arenas, providing authoritative guidance on counternarcotics and maritime law enforcement matters.  Its role extends beyond national borders, contributing to collaborative efforts in countering the global narcotics trade.
  3. Oversight and Coordination – Serving as the designated NDDS representative, the Policy Unit assumes an oversight and coordination role within investigative review committees of law enforcement agencies.  By ensuring alignment and synergy, the Policy Unit enhances the efficacy of counternarcotics endeavors.
  4. Training and Assistance – With a commitment to innovation, the Policy Unit creates progressive approaches through the delivery of advanced training, assistance, and counsel.  United States Attorneys’ offices and federal agencies benefit from insights into the latest narcotics issues, strengthening their capabilities to address evolving challenges.

Trend Analysis and Legislation – A cornerstone of the Policy Unit’s efforts involves vigilant monitoring of national narcotics trafficking trends.  Proposing legislative interventions to counter emerging drug trafficking methods and rectify legislative gaps, the Policy Unit proactively contributes to the evolution of effective counternarcotics policies.

Authoritative Resource – The Federal Narcotics Prosecutions manual, meticulously edited and regularly updated by the Policy Unit, serves as the Department's premier source of guidance for international and domestic narcotics investigations and prosecutions.  Distributed nationwide, this comprehensive manual empowers federal narcotics prosecutors on the latest legal guidance in the field.
