About the Office:

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California is one of the largest in the country. This office prosecutes federal crimes and defends the interests of the United States Government in civil cases. The Southern District of California encompasses San Diego and Imperial Counties and includes a branch office located in El Centro, (Imperial Valley) California.

Job Description:

The U.S. Attorney's Office is currently accepting applications for a limited number of one-year term Uncompensated Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) positions for the Criminal and Civil Divisions in the San Diego office. The one-year term appointment may be extended in some circumstances.

The Criminal Division casework will focus on the prosecution of Title 8 and Title 21 cases.  Responsibilities include handling complaints, initial appearances, detention hearings, and other hearings set before magistrate courts, and may include some matters before the district court. 

The Civil Division casework will focus on defending the United States in cases involving personal injury and wrongful death, employment discrimination, constitutional torts, medical malpractice, and immigration.

Selected candidates will receive extensive courtroom and trial experience.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: This position is open to all qualified candidates from the private and public sectors. Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), and have at least 1* year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. Qualifying legal experience may include work as an attorney, a judicial law clerk in either federal or state court and/or litigation experience in either the public or private sector. An exceedingly strong academic background, and exemplary writing skills are essential.  U.S. citizenship is required.

Note: Employees of the Department of Justice, including Uncompensated Special Assistant United States Attorneys, may not engage in the compensated practice of law outside the office. Attorneys are not eligible to serve as Uncompensated Special Assistant United States Attorneys if they have had an employment offer deferred by a law firm and received a payment for the period of their deferral with the expectation of future employment with the law firm, or if they will receive any payment from a law firm during their unpaid employment with the Department of Justice. In addition, contractors, including employees of contractors who do business with the Department of Justice, and who also are attorneys, are not eligible to serve as Uncompensated Special Assistant United States Attorneys.

Travel:

Occasional travel, both within and outside the District, may be required, depending on the needs of particular cases.

Salary Information:

The Special Assistant United States Attorney position is an uncompensated position.

Location:

San Diego, California. The Southern District of California is home to the largest concentration of Navy and Marine Corps installations in the world. The entire southern boundary of the District borders the Republic of Mexico. Contained within the District are international ports of entry at San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, Tecate, Calexico (two ports, East and West) and Andrade. The entire western boundary of the District lies on the Pacific Ocean, with a major port in San Diego.
